Dining Table Masterclasses with Josh Carmody

START DESIGNING & BOOK NOW

The dining table is the soul of the home.

It's the most important piece of furniture in any home.

There, I said it.

Designing and making the dining table for my family is something I appreciate every time we sit down together.

If I could bottle that feeling up and sell it, I would...

Then I realised I could.

So I created Lost Profit Workshop for you to design your own dining table and make it in my workshop, with my guidance.

Overview

A brief overview of the Masterclass

Design your own dining table, to the size and style you want, and then craft it with your own hands. It's easier than you might think.

I will show you.

Step 1:

Design Your Table

Using our Table Designing tool to choose the base design of your table.

Table top shape, table frame style, table size and the timber/finish of your table.

Rest assured, this is a start point that allows us to price your table, and proceed to booking.

Step 2:

Reserve Your Place

Reserve Your place in the Masterclass of your choosing.

We offer a small number of courses per month.

Each course will run over 4 days + 1 day to finalise any details.

Each class has a maximum of 2 participants, so you aren't spending all your time waiting for machines to be available, and ensuring your final product is of a high standard you can be proud of.

Once booked in, you can proceed to refining your design.

Step 3:

Refine your design

Upon booking you will receive a document to explain further design options and considerations for your table.

The devil is in the details:
- Edge profiles
- Corner details
- Leg Shape
- Leg positioning/spacing
- Table Top Shape

All of these details and others will have an aesthetic and functional impact, making your table yours.

Step 4:

Workshop Days

On day 1, I will show you around the workshop and give you a safety induction.

We will then review your designs, and create the working 3D-CAD model of your design - from which we refer to and adjust throughout the build, as we build.

From here we will select the timber, lay out your table top and get to work.

Step 5:

Makers Mark & Lettering

Upon completion of your table - you will have the option to stamp the date, your name, and the names of your family members somewhere into your new dining table.

You can also brand your table with Josh's brand if you so choose.

Step 7:

Delivery & Install

Once the oil is dry, it is home time for your table.

Option 1: Come and collect your table from the workshop.

Option 2: Arrange for us to deliver it for to you. (Fees apply)

Step 7:

Enjoy

Enjoy sitting around the dining table you made with your own two hands.

Family dinners. Sunday roasts. Happy birthdays. Toasting life's events. Kids doing homework. Starting your own business.

All things I have enjoyed and experienced, at my dining table.

And you will have your own experiences around yours.

Maintain & Repair

Life happens. Your table will get used. scuffed, scratched, dented and loved. It is what it is.

Having made your table - you will have the confidence and know-how to repair it.

We finish our tables in a hard wax oil.

Firstly because they leave a protective finish on the table surface, that also penetrates into the timber.

Secondly, because unlike other finishes, they can be maintained, rejuvenated, refinished easily.

You will learn how.

About Josh Carmody

Josh Carmody is an international award winning furniture designer and maker.

Sounds lame to write that. And in third person. But here we are.

Eventually these worlds collided.

There was a fork in the road.

He chose to run his own furniture design studio and workshop.

03

Specialties

He specialises in solid timber furniture making. He uses a combination of hand sketching and CAD software throughout the design process.

And a mix of hand tools, power tools, and commercial woodworking machinery to achieve a world class level of design and handcrafted detail regardless of the scale of the project.

About Lost Profit Workshop

Lost Profit Workshop is a concept by Josh Carmody.

When I originally floated the idea of a dining table masterclass, some people told me I would be undercutting my own client pipeline.

I guess we’ll see.

But anyway, this feedback led me to a name that made me laugh and a logo that seemed to design itself.

02

About the workshop

Josh Carmody Studio workshop is a humble furniture making workshop with all the essential machinery and tooling for solid timber furniture production.

03

Teaching/Learning Philosophy

When it comes to learning, I am more of a “bite off more than you can chew and chew like hell” kind of guy.

A lot of woodworking classes focus on mastering hand tool fundamentals and making a small piece or furniture. Which is great for some.

What makes this masterclass different, is we apply many of the same lessons to a larger piece of furniture.

While also utilising commercial tooling and machinery to achieve an exceptional finish.

04

Learning Style

There won’t be much in the way of classroom learning.

Sure there will be some theory imparted. And diagrams on whiteboards and paper. And you can take notes if you so choose.

But in many cases, I will be imparting theory, and applying these lessons in real time.

It is hands on. I believe there is no better way
to learn.

05

Learning Takeaways

You will learn the fundamentals of how I approach designing tables in solid timber.

Naturally these lessons are transferrable to other woodworking projects.

Best practice and theories around:
Timber movement
Grain direction
Joinery fundamentals
Lamination
Glue ups
Production methodology
Router templates
Finishing
Repairs & Maintenance
Safe use of tools & machinery

06

Skill Takeaways

Just as there are many ways catch a rabbit. There are many ways to build tables. Here you will gain some insights in to the way I build mine.

We will be utilising different tools and machinery depending on your table.

Processes may include the use of our panel saw, drop saw, bandsaw, morticer, tenonor, wide belt sander, mallet & chisels, hand planes, orbital sanders, routers,
trim routers.

By the end of the course you will have learned new skills and methods, furthered developed your skills, and/or perhaps learned a new perspective on a process or method.
