ABOUT

The dining table is an object around which a family grows up.

Meals. Happy birthdays. Graduations. Milestones. Celebrations.

The family dining table witnesses it all.

About Lost Profit Workshop

Lost Profit Workshop is a concept by Josh Carmody.

When I originally floated the idea of a dining table masterclass, some people told me I would be undercutting my own client pipeline.

I guess we’ll see.

But anyway, this feedback led me to a name that made me laugh and a logo that seemed to designed itself.

02

About the workshop

Josh Carmody Studio workshop is a furniture making workshop with all the essential machinery and tooling for solid timber furniture production.

03

Teaching/Learning Philosophy

When it comes to learning, I am more of a “bite off more than you can chew and chew like hell” kind of guy.

A lot of woodworking classes focus on mastering hand tool fundamentals and making a small piece or furniture.

What makes this masterclass different, is we that apply many of these same lessons to a larger piece of furniture.

While also utilising commercial tooling and machinery to achieve an exceptional finish.

04

Teaching/Learning Style

There won’t be much in the way of classroom learning.

Sure there will be some theory imparted. And diagrams on whiteboards and paper. And you can take notes if you so choose.

But in many cases, I will be explaining theory and processes, and we will be applying these lessons in real time.

It is hands on. I believe there is no better way
to learn.

05

Learning Takeaways

You will learn the fundamentals of how I approach designing tables in solid timber.

Naturally these lessons are transferrable to other woodworking projects.

Lessons learned will revolve around:
Timber movement
Grain direction
Joinery fundamentals
Lamination
Glue ups
Production methodology
Router templates
Finishing
Repairs & Maintenance
Safe use of tools & machinery

06

Skill Takeaways

There are many ways catch a rabbit, and there are many ways to build tables.

Here you will gain some insights into the way I design and build mine.

We will be utilising various tools and machinery depending on your table.

Processes may include the use of our panel saw, drop saw, bandsaw, morticer, tenonor, wide belt sander, mallet & chisels, hand planes, orbital sanders, routers, trim routers.

By the end of the course you will have learned new skills and methods, further developed your skills, and/or perhaps learned a new perspective on a process or method.

He has since made a name for himself designing and hand crafting bespoke works for homes, workplaces, galleries and boardrooms around the country.

And has worked with studios including Hassell, Woods Bagot, Grey Puksand, Bates Smart, making bespoke works of furniture for companies including Australian Unity, BHP, Haworth, Seek, TarraWarra Estate, Vicinity, and University of Melbourne.

04

He specialises in solid timber furniture making. He uses a combination of hand sketching and CAD software throughout the design process.

And a mix of hand tools, power tools, and commercial woodworking machinery to achieve a world class level of design and handcrafted detail regardless of the scale of the project.
